STEP File Tools: Viewer, Dimensions, Volume & Conversion

Open, measure and troubleshoot STEP/STP files with focused tools for dimensions, volume, surface area, weight, format comparison and conversion workflows.

STEP is the main neutral CAD exchange format used across many mechanical design, CAM, supplier and quoting workflows. This page collects the STEP-specific tools and guides on CADProps so you can move from opening a file to checking dimensions, calculating properties and diagnosing bad geometry without jumping between unrelated pages.

Start with the STEP viewer

Use the STEP viewer when you need to open a STEP or STP file, inspect the model and confirm that the expected bodies or assembly components loaded.

Before using any calculated property, verify one known dimension and the model scope.

STEP measurement tools

Choose the tool that matches the question:

A bounding box, a local distance, a surface-area result and a solid-volume result are different quantities. Keep the calculation method and units with every value.

Common STEP problems

These guides cover the issues that most often make a file look plausible but behave incorrectly:

STEP format choices

STEP is not one single implementation profile.

The receiving workflow matters more than choosing the largest protocol number or changing the filename extension.

Converting STEP to other formats

Use the tools directory to see currently validated conversion targets. Conversion should be followed by a receiving-side check of units, body scope and critical geometry.

For a repeatable handoff process, use the CAD conversion checklist.

Download STEP samples for testing

CADProps publishes small, non-customer sample models for viewer and integration testing.

The CAD sample file library includes a simple block, cylinder, inch-unit model, assembly and open-surface case with known expected properties.

These are useful when you need to determine whether a problem belongs to your file or to the viewing/conversion workflow.

Know the limits

A STEP file that renders successfully is not automatically suitable for manufacturing approval. Always verify the intended revision, units, body/component scope and any controlling drawing or specification.

CADProps distinguishes valid solid properties from unavailable results rather than substituting a bounding-box estimate when solid geometry is not usable.
