STEP to STL: Conversion Guide & Mesh Settings

STEP to STL is not available in this release. Read the format notes and ask your sender for a self-contained STEP file.

Not available in this release

This format or conversion is not supported. Ask the sender to export a self-contained STEP file, then inspect it with the STEP viewer.

Know what you are looking at.

Use STL when the next application needs a triangle mesh. Choose export settings for that task, and check one known dimension after import rather than assuming the unit survived.

01

Agree the scale

The STL receiving workflow needs a unit convention. Verify one known dimension after export; fitting a model to the viewport does not check its physical scale.

02

Use resolution for the task

Export parameters can control how curved surfaces become triangles. A smooth shaded preview does not prove that the actual silhouette is sufficiently detailed. Inspect the regions that matter to the print or analysis task.

03

Keep source and derivative together

An STL output should identify the source revision and settings. Do not replace the native or STEP source when later CAD work may need the richer geometry. Model format conversion is not available in this release.

Questions about this task

Know the limits.

Which files can I process?

Supported inputs are STEP/STP, IGES/IGS, STL, OBJ, 3MF, static GLB/GLTF, bounded ZIP packages and DWG 2D previews. Capabilities depend on format. Native CAD formats and downloadable model conversion are unavailable.

Are files uploaded?

Yes. Selecting or dropping files uploads and processes them immediately in every tool. Files are processed temporarily on this server. The workspace displays the configured retention time. Delete in the file menu permanently removes your files; closing a view does not.

Do I need an account?

No. Your temporary workspace uses a browser session cookie. There is no account, subscription or permanent file library.

How are properties calculated?

STEP/IGES use B-Rep geometry; mesh files use approximate triangle properties and require closed consistent meshes for volume. DWG is a 2D preview without physical properties. STL/OBJ coordinates assume mm. Mass uses your chosen density.
