This guide covers general CAD workflows. CADProps supports STEP, IGES, SolidWorks parts and ZIP assemblies, STL, OBJ, 3MF and static GLB/GLTF. Validated conversions are downloadable. Partial assemblies carry warnings; properties cover loaded geometry only.

A .prt extension does not identify Siemens NX by itself. NX uses PRT files, but other CAD systems also use the same extension. Before troubleshooting a viewer, confirm which application created the file. That one check prevents a large class of false "unsupported PRT" problems.

CADProps supports tested Siemens NX / UG NX PRT inputs for browser inspection and STEP conversion. It is intended for viewing readable geometry, checking properties and creating a neutral handoff. It is not a replacement for NX when you need to edit the original feature history, expressions or manufacturing setup.

Start with the NX viewer when the source is known to be Siemens NX.

First confirm that PRT means NX

Ask the sender for the source application and release if the file origin is unclear. Creo also uses .prt, and a filename alone cannot reliably distinguish the two ecosystems.

The PRT file: NX or Creo? guide lists practical ways to identify the source before you upload or convert anything. Do not change the extension to force a file into a different importer.

Technical reader documentation also treats native format versions separately. A reader that supports some NX releases may still reject a newer or unusual file. The current NX format reference is useful background when diagnosing a version-specific failure.

Open an NX PRT online

  1. Open the Siemens NX / UG NX viewer.
  2. Select the original PRT file. If the model depends on additional native files, collect the required files together instead of uploading only the root.
  3. Wait for the geometry to load, then use Fit and rotate the model to confirm that the expected part is present.
  4. Check the reported units and X, Y and Z extents.
  5. Measure one known dimension from the drawing or sender.
  6. Inspect body and assembly information for missing or unexpected geometry.
  7. Use the NX to STEP converter only after the native model passes those basic checks.

A model that renders successfully is ready for inspection, not automatically approved for manufacturing.

Use a known dimension as the fastest sanity check

When you do not have NX installed, it is easy to over-trust a clean 3D preview. A known dimension gives you a stronger check.

Suppose the sender says a plate is approximately 250 mm long. If the viewer reports about 9.84 in after a unit switch, those values are consistent. If it reports 250 inches or 9.84 mm, stop and investigate before calculating volume or exporting another format.

Also compare the number of visible bodies with what you expect. Multi-body parts and assemblies can look reasonable even when a referenced component is absent.

Common NX PRT problems

Symptom What to check
PRT is rejected Confirm that it is actually an NX file rather than Creo or another PRT format
File opens but scale looks wrong Confirm source units and compare a known dimension
Geometry is incomplete Check referenced files and any missing-component warning
Newer file fails Ask which NX release saved it and request a compatible export
STEP output opens differently Compare bodies, orientation and key dimensions in the receiving system
Feature tree is unavailable A neutral/viewing workflow does not reproduce the original NX feature history

Do not repeatedly resave a questionable file through mesh formats just to make it display. If the downstream task needs CAD solids, keep a solid-capable exchange route such as STEP.

When STEP is the better deliverable

If the recipient only needs to quote, inspect or import the shape into another CAD/CAM package, STEP can be more portable than a native NX PRT. Read NX PRT to STEP for the conversion-specific checks.

A useful request to the sender is: "Please export the released NX model as STEP, confirm the units and revision, and include the native PRT as reference." If the model is an assembly, ask whether component names and placements must remain separate.

After conversion, reopen the STEP file in the destination system. Check at least one known dimension and the expected body or component count before continuing.

Keep the drawing and revision context

A native PRT or converted STEP file does not tell you which drawing revision, material specification or tolerance set governs the job unless that information is explicitly part of the handoff.

For quoting and supplier review, record the filename, source release if known, revision, units and any missing geometry warning. That small amount of context is more valuable than an unlabeled screenshot.

Open an NX PRT file after you have confirmed that the PRT really came from Siemens NX.
