# Rhino 3DM Viewer Online: Open Saved Meshes

Open Rhino 3DM files online using saved render or analysis meshes. Inspect file units and blocks; learn what to do when a file has no saved meshes.

Open a Rhino `.3dm` file in the browser without installing Rhino. CADProps displays mesh objects and accessible render or analysis meshes saved in the file. Viewing does not require an account; selecting a file uploads it for server processing.

## What a 3DM file contains

3DM is Rhino's model format. It can contain several geometry types, document units, layers and block instances. This viewer uses saved triangle geometry for display. It does not rebuild uncached NURBS surfaces or extrusions into a new mesh, and it does not support SubD display.

## How to open a Rhino 3DM file online

1. Select the original `.3dm` file in the upload panel.
2. Wait for processing, then rotate, zoom and fit the displayed model.
3. Read unit and completeness notices. Compare a known dimension and the expected objects with the source model.
4. If objects are missing, return to Rhino and save with render meshes, or export the required geometry as STEP.

## Files saved without meshes: Save Small and the workaround

A 3DM file saved without accessible meshes cannot be displayed yet. Rhino's [**Save Small** option](https://docs.mcneel.com/rhino/8/help/en-us/commands/save.htm) removes render and analysis meshes; a valid file may therefore return a no-saved-mesh message. In Rhino, generate the render meshes by viewing the model in a shaded or rendered mode, then save with render meshes included and Save Small disabled. Alternatively, export supported surfaces and solids to STEP and use the [STEP viewer](https://www.cadprops.com/tools/step-viewer/index.md). Renaming `.3dm` to `.step` does not convert it. Saving again does not make unsupported geometry types such as SubD supported here.

## File units, blocks and incomplete models

Supported document units are read from the file and normalized to millimetres internally; inch and centimetre files are scaled accordingly. Unitless, custom or unsupported units fall back to assumed millimetres, with physical measurements unavailable. Check the unit notice rather than judging scale from camera fit.

Embedded block instances, including nested blocks, use their saved placements. Only visible objects and layers are displayed. Missing block definitions, objects without usable caches and display-budget limits can leave an incomplete model. Warnings describe the missing scope; a visible portion does not establish that every object loaded.

## Approximate display, measurement and export limits

The saved meshes approximate the source geometry. Available dimensions and point distances describe those meshes, not exact Rhino NURBS geometry. This path provides no exact B-Rep measurement, analytic edge or hole measurement, native Rhino editing, or exact STEP export. Surface area, volume and calculated mass are currently unavailable on this saved-mesh path. If an exact CAD handoff is needed, export STEP from Rhino and check it in the receiving application. Display does not establish manufacturing tolerances.

## Upload and retention

Files are processed on the server. Guests use a temporary workspace copy limited to their browser session, which expires after the displayed retention period and can be deleted early. Signed-in files are saved to the account library when space is available; otherwise they remain temporary. Conversion, account storage and share creation require signing in. Review [privacy](https://www.cadprops.com/privacy/index.md) before uploading confidential geometry and [accuracy](https://www.cadprops.com/accuracy/index.md) before using numerical results.

## Capabilities and limits

- View Rhino 3DM mesh objects and accessible saved render or analysis meshes, including embedded block placements.
- No uncached NURBS meshing, SubD display, exact B-Rep measurement, native editing or exact STEP export.
- Files are uploaded for server processing. Supported document units are read from the file; unsupported units assume millimetres and disable physical measurements.
- Viewing does not require an account. Account storage and share creation require signing in; guest files are temporary.

## Questions about this task

### How can I open a 3DM file without Rhino?

Upload a supported 3DM file to CADProps. Mesh objects and accessible saved render or analysis meshes are displayed in the browser. Viewing requires no account, but the file is processed on the server.

### Why does a valid Rhino file show no saved meshes?

Files saved without accessible meshes, for example with Save Small, cannot be displayed yet. Generate render meshes in Rhino and save with meshes included and Save Small disabled, or export STEP. SubD display is not supported.

### Does the 3DM viewer preserve units and blocks?

Supported document units are scaled to millimetres internally. Unsupported or unitless files assume millimetres with physical measurements unavailable. Embedded nested block placements are applied; unresolved blocks and uncached objects cause incomplete results.

### Can I measure or export exact Rhino geometry?

No exact B-Rep measurement or exact STEP export is available from this saved-mesh path. Available mesh dimensions and point distances are approximate; surface area, volume and calculated mass are currently unavailable. Export STEP from Rhino for an exact CAD handoff and verify it in the receiving application.
