# Open DWG or DXF Files Without AutoCAD

DWG and DXF are not enabled for viewing or conversion. 2D drawings are not supported. For 3D geometry, ask for a self-contained STEP file.

This guide covers general CAD workflows. CADProps supports STEP, IGES, SolidWorks parts and ZIP assemblies, STL, OBJ, 3MF and static GLB/GLTF. Validated conversions are downloadable. Partial assemblies carry warnings; properties cover loaded geometry only.

DWG is the native drawing format associated with AutoCAD, and DXF is a related exchange format. People ask for both when they want to open a drawing or a 3D model without AutoCAD. On CADProps, **neither DWG nor DXF is an enabled public format**.

The [DWG format note](https://www.cadprops.com/tools/dwg-viewer/) records why. A 3D DWG conversion was tried and did not pass independent geometry validation, so the path stays disabled. 2D paper space, layouts, annotations and drawing previews are not offered. DXF is not a validated input or output.

Renaming `.dwg` or `.dxf` to `.step` does not create a STEP file. Uploading the drawing under another extension is not a workaround.

## 2D drawings and 3D models are different requests

A DWG can be a 2D fabrication drawing, a 3D model, or a mix of model space and paper space with external references. A viewer that only understands boundary solids will not faithfully reproduce title blocks, dimensions, hatches or xrefs. This site does not claim that drawing view.

If the file is the controlling 2D drawing, open it in a workflow that actually supports that DWG or DXF version. Do not treat a missing preview here as proof that the drawing is corrupt.

If the file is 3D geometry you need to measure, ask the author for a **self-contained STEP** of the solids you care about. STEP is the format to open in the [STEP viewer](https://www.cadprops.com/tools/step-viewer/index.md). IGES is an alternative only when the recipient's surface workflow expects it. STL is a mesh, with assumed millimetres and approximate measurements, and it is the wrong substitute for a drawing.

## What a STEP request should include

- the revision that matches the drawing;
- units;
- which bodies or components belong in the model;
- whether external references were bound into the export.

An export that drops xrefs can look complete and still omit parts. After it arrives, check one known dimension from the drawing before using volume or mass. Volume requires a closed solid. Mass requires a density you confirm. The drawing, not the shaded model, still carries the tolerances unless the model explicitly includes that product information and the receiver can read it.

## Formats that are easy to confuse with DWG

Do not send a DXF through a mesh converter and then quote solid properties from the triangles. That number is not the drawing.

## If you cannot obtain STEP

Say so to the sender. A screenshot, a PDF plot or a native DWG opened in AutoCAD-compatible software may be the honest way to read a 2D sheet. Those options are outside this site. For 3D measurement, wait for a STEP or another enabled solid format rather than forcing DWG.

The limits are also listed in the [format matrix](https://www.cadprops.com/supported-formats/index.md). A successful upload of some other CAD file does not mean DWG has been turned on.
